Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
