Democratic officials expressed anger after former President Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and declared they should be taken into custody and punished "through capital punishment" following their posting of a controversial video.
The recorded message, published on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who formerly worked in defense or defense capacities.
"Similar to us, you all made an pledge to defend and uphold this constitution," the officials declared in the 90-second video. "And right now, the risks to our democratic foundation are not only from overseas, but from right here at home. Our regulations are clear, you can decline improper directives, you can reject illegal orders, you must decline unlawful commands. No one has to carry out commands that violate the law or our constitution."
The clip seemed to provoke a heated reply from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he stated: "This constitutes really serious, and Harmful to our Country. Their statements cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's comments on that day, Democratic leadership released a unified announcement denouncing the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no place in this nation," they declared. "Congress members who were featured in the video all worked our country with exceptional national pride and distinction. We strongly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous death threats against congressional representatives, and urge House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The party representatives also stated that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to make certain the protection of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these radical online messages and recant his aggressive rhetoric before he causes harm," the statement stated.
The officials who appeared in the video also released a declaration.
"We serve as veterans and national security professionals who value this country and swore an vow to defend and support the national charter of the United States," they stated. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we plan to maintain it. No warning, pressure, or incitement will stop us from that fundamental duty."
"The significant point is that the ex-president considers it liable to punishment by death for us to reiterate the law," they stated. "Our service members should understand that we have their protection as they fulfill their oath to the founding principles and responsibility to obey only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "All citizens must unite and censure the former president's demands for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a time for moral clarity."
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the death of elected officials."
He stated: "This represents an direct THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, every American – without partisan consideration – should condemn this without delay and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "It is very harmful, you have leading members of the legislature instructing troops to disobey orders, I think that's unprecedented in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also according to sources told journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the violation of sedition" but that "attorneys have to parse the language and establish all that."
During a administration briefing on later that day, when questioned by a media member, "Is the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary replied: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the former president is responding to," the representative stated. "We see sitting members of the federal government who conspired to arrange a recorded statement to individuals of the national defense, to active duty service members encouraging them to defy the president's legal commands."
She stated: "The purity of our military relies on the hierarchy, and if that system is broken, it can result in casualties, it can lead to confusion, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are essentially promoting."
