The New Zealand heavyweight tested positive during a anti-doping examination carried out the same day of his 11th-round loss versus English fighter Fabio Wardley.
Wardley along with the New Zealander participated in a thrilling contest held in London in late October to decide who would become mandatory WBO contender facing undisputed world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.
Parker had positioned himself as next in line to face Usyk following putting together a notable six consecutive victories, but placed his contender position at stake during the bout and suffered an 11th-round stoppage.
A routine test given to the boxer through Vada on the day of the bout showed an adverse result and leaves Parker facing a challenge to clear his name.
Parker's promotional company issued a statement which read: "The anti-doping body alerted all required parties regarding Joseph Parker returned an adverse finding following a drug screening carried out on the fight day. During the ongoing inquiry, no more comments will be made at this time."
Parker was crowned titleholder six years ago before he was defeated for his championship belt via unanimous decision against Anthony Joshua at the Millennium Stadium in 2018.
Joseph Parker became an active participant in the UK since then, competing in eight bouts in total in Britain and moving to Dublin for training camps under esteemed mentor Andy Lee over the past few years.
Under the tutelage of Lee, the boxer overcame his defeat in 2022 against Joe Joyce to chalk up multiple wins which put him as the top contender to challenge Usyk until he suffered defeat against Wardley.
Subsequent to the boxer produced a failed test on the day of the Wardley fight, allegedly for cocaine, an investigation into the findings has been started.
