The global fast-food chain has taken down a Christmas advert created using AI following encountering considerable online backlash.
The short film was developed with the help of AI video tools and was first uploaded online for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.
Shortly after its release, audiences online denounced the implementation of AI in the advert. A number of called it "disturbing" and "jarringly assembled".
"This incident is an important lesson as we investigate the effective utilization of generative technology," said a representative from the company.
The commercial was developed for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It showed various things that can go wrong over the festive season, using the tagline "the worst time of the year".
Commercials that incorporate AI tools have become a rising phenomenon among prominent companies, particularly for the Christmas period.
Following the commercial being pulled, The Sweetshop's head, Melanie Bridge, defended the project.
She stated, the production process took "over a month and a half" and involved producing "numerous versions" which were then edited in post-production "in the same way we would on any high-craft production".
"This wasn't an AI trick," she commented. "The result was a proper commercial."
While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was largely criticized, the sentiment for other AI-assisted campaigns has been divisive.
For instance, a consecutive AI-generated holiday ad from another major brand reportedly received a 61% "favorable response" from online commenters.
However, several companies have also received scrutiny for employing the technique in their campaigns. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for advertisements that some called "lazy" and "disturbing".
The incident underscores the ongoing conversation within the advertising and production industries about the trade-off between AI efficiency and human craftsmanship.
