The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Bayern was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major boost to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent performances include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen additional activity:
On the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
