The move from the DNC to block the publication regarding its internal post-election analysis on the 2024 election seems shocking but entirely predictable. Opposed to frank assessments, the party's leadership apparatus behaves closer to a publicity machine than a political organization devoted to building a volunteer base for winning elections.
Hesitant to challenge the prevailing attitude of conformity, the DNC has remained under the influence of the previous administration throughout this past year. Making public such a report could have demonstrated whether the leadership are interested to encourage honest conversation regarding the errors that enabled Donald Trump to win re-election. Yet, the DNC is proceeding under the pretense that there is little to glean following the stunning loss of 2024.
"Here’s our North Star: does this help us win? If the answer is no, it is an unnecessary diversion from what truly matters," a rationale reportedly given for withholding the analysis.
A genuine analysis worth its salt would confront a series of difficult topics. This encompasses:
The decision to withhold aligns with a pattern of evading difficult realities. This mirrors a dynamic where nearly all Democratic officeholder in Congress supported an incumbent's decision for seeking another term until a disastrous campaign event forced a reversal.
Concurrently, a significant majority within the party's base were continually telling pollsters that they did not want that candidate to be the nominee.
A substantive analysis might also examine questions about campaign spending, including what sums flowed to high-priced advisors and media firms over the course of a campaign that managed to spend a colossal sum over a few months.
Ultimately, the secrecy surrounding this report points to a submission to party leaders responsible for a disastrous national race. The implication to rank-and-file members – which includes millions of small donors – is that they cannot be trusted to see what the leadership say they discovered from a report based on feedback from all states.
A political entity unwilling to honestly assess its own failings is unlikely to break free from the pattern which was so beneficial to the rival party.
